When I sign a file with my PGP 6.5.8 version, I get the following
message.

An error has occurred: end of file

However, the signature does verify though.

What's the problem?

Are you selecting the file without opening it, right-clicking, and then
selecting [PGP > Sign] from the pull-down context menu? If so, are you
requesting a detached signature?

Or are you opening the file, selecting the window, clicking on PGP on
the Windows tray, and then selecting [Current Window > Sign] from the
popup context menu?

Yes. Everything works. I do sign the thing because it does create
the detached sig and the sig validates the file. The only problem
seems to be that I end up with the error stated. The error does not
seem to screw up the signing though.

I am not opening the file. Some of the files I've tried it on have
been exe files. Opening those didn't make much sense to me. (But it
won't be the first time that "common sense" would lead me astray.)

In this case, I can't give you any advice. I can't test your situation
because I don't have PGP 6.5.8.

I have PGP 2.6.2, 5.0, and 8.0.3 on my Windows XP PC, which recently
died. A new Windows 7 PC will be configured for me (additional hard
drive) this coming Thursday. I don't know if any of those old versions
of PGP will install and work with Windows 7.
